Even though I don’t work in an office outside my home anymore, I still try to be closed for memorial day to spend time with my husband who is off work, and kids who are out of school.
To kids, it really is just a day off work, but to most adults in the United States, Memorial Day is a time to reflect and remember all those servicemen and women who lost their lives protecting our country.
I grew up in a military family. My Dad was in the Air Force for over 25 years and both my grandfathers served in different branches of the military.
There are so many amazing men and women who died defending our country and it’s an honor in taking a day in observance of those sacrifices.
Ways to Celebrate Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a federal holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May.
What began as Declaration Day to mourn those who died fighting during the Civil War in the late 1800s (and was always celebrated on May 30th), has become a national holiday in remembrance of all military soldiers who died in any wars.
In 1971 the date was changed to the last Monday of May. Depending on where you live, there might be a Memorial parade to go to or people also will decorate soldiers’ graves with flowers or an American flag. Grab a pack of American Flags on Amazon and go with a group or your kids and add a flag yourself.
Veterans Day is a different holiday that is observed on November 11th and honors all those that have served in the armed services.
Closed for Memorial Day Signs
Most offices will be closed the entire weekend plus the following Monday so you’ll have to hang up the custom signs either on the Sunday or the preceding Friday before the holiday.
I had a hard time just designing one closed sign, so I have three different sign templates for you. The download button for all three designs in PDF format is at the bottom of the post.
One Memorial Day sign design is in portrait mode and states “our office will be closed on Monday in observance of Memorial Day”. Since Memorial Day lands on a different date each year, I didn’t add the date to the memorial sign.
Then there are two Closed for Memorial Day printable templates in landscape mode. One has a faded American Flag behind it and the other has the words in a flag motion.
You could also laminate the signs and turn them into yard signs for in front of your building.
The PDF file is in color, but the signs look fine in black and white also!
